Typing, Shorthand? What are those?

Posted by wapahanialumni on April 20, 2009 at 8:43 AM

I recently posted a comment on Facebook where I proudly proclaimed that I was "computer literate" !  A response to that was "who says computer any more?  It's like saying you're going to tape a movie--Scotch, duct?" I guess I was showing my age:)   In a separate, unrelated communication with friend Bob Vandevender, WHS '77, Bob mentioned that he took typing when few boys did.  That was, in turn, a response to something I had said about taking "shorthand" .  The Facebook incident reminded me that we no longer call it "typing".  From an early age, all kids are now taught "keyboarding".  Shorthand has been obsolete for a few decades, and the typewriters we once used are in museums or landfills.  But it brings back so many memories of Mrs. Betty Briggs, Mr. Robert Boggs, and Mrs. Anna Louise Cline!  While I loved the teachers, I hated all those timed tests!

Yes, keyboarding is the new old word but even it is on the ropes right now. Remember when people would make an air-sign with their fingers showing typing or keyboarding? That has now been replaced with the two thumbs "texting."

OMG I so remember those classes. I too loved those teachers but I also loved the timed tests in shorthand only. Typing not so much.

I don't know about when you were there, but we only had 1 or 2 IBM Selectrics. Only the best typists got to use them. The rest of us had to use the "manual" ones, and boy, were they manual. I found out later, when I was able to use an electric typewriter, I was pretty speedy!! Shorthand was fun, though! Nothing was holding me back. It was just a bore to take the tests:)

Graduated in 1979. Started out on the manuals - the big old iron ones - and then moved up to the selectrics.

I had Mrs. Eastman. I remember Mary Ann Boggs got the selectric in my class. She sat to my left and Ernie Gibson sat to my right. I started out using all my fingers. I would look over at Mary Ann and see her just going to town on that machine and then I'd look over at Ernie and watch him hunt and peck with two fingers... and he was beating me every time. Drove me nuts! So I dropped typing. The teacher asked me "Would you rather type or dig a ditch?" I said, "I'd rather dig a ditch, they make more money." Boy, was I stupid. If I only knew then what I know now...
